Part 3: Managing Three Notes in Each Hand (Exercise 5 & 6)

Please go back and watch the video for the previous lesson.
Back

Welcome to a new challenge in your piano journey! This lesson is designed to help you master the control of three distinct notes with each hand, a vital skill for advancing your piano technique.

Day 1: Introduction and Initial Practice

  1. Written Guidance: Before diving into playing, read the ‘Detailed Breakdown of Exercises’ in the Materials tab. It offers an in-depth view of what to expect and how best to tackle these exercises.
  2. Video Guidance: Watch the lesson video closely and follow along. This visual aid is essential for grasping the basic coordination required.
  3. Sheet Music Practice: Now, focus on practicing with the sheet music alone, applying the insights you’ve gained from the video.
  4. Exercise 6 – Audio Download: Grab the MP3 file available in the Materials tab.
  5. Play Along: Use this MP3 as your backing track. It’s a great tool to help you get the rhythm right and improve your musicality.

Day 2: Reinforcement and Rhythm Mastery

  1. Focused Practice: Return to the sheet music for thorough practice. Strive for comfort and familiarity with the exercise. Remember to keep your eyes on the music as much as possible.
  2. Groove Along: Finish your practice by playing along with the ‘Exercise 6 – A B C notes groove.mp3’ track. This is more than just a rhythm exercise; it’s an opportunity to develop your listening skills. Pay attention to what’s happening in the track, as if you’re playing with other musicians. While it’s a prerecorded backing track now, this practice will prepare you for future opportunities to play with real bands or ensembles. Learning to listen and blend with other musical elements is a vital skill for any pianist.

Completing these steps on Day 2 means you’re ready to advance to the next level. As always, remember that steady practice and patience are your keys to success in mastering the piano.

Detailed Breakdown of Exercises Approaching These Two Exercises:

  1. Starting Slowly: If you find these exercises challenging, take it one step at a time. Begin with the right hand, then the left hand, and only then try both hands together. Start slowly, and as you gain confidence, gradually increase the tempo. This approach ensures you build a solid foundation.
  2. Handling Simplicity: If the exercises seem easy right off the bat, you might not need to start with one hand at a time. However, never underestimate an exercise by thinking it's too simple. I've seen students who claim an exercise is easy, but their performance tells a different story. They might hit the right notes, but the sound is often harsh and rushed. If it's easy, that's great – use this as an opportunity to focus on the quality of sound you produce. Are you hitting the keys too hard? Challenge yourself with this question: How softly can you play? This focus on dynamics and touch can turn a simple exercise into a valuable lesson in expression and control.
