Lesson 29: Playing with a Band – Rhythm Workout Part 1-2

Building on our previous lesson, this session introduces a third chord – G – into our rhythmic practice. While the primary goal remains the same, playing chords precisely on beat one, this addition of the G chord serves as a stepping stone towards mastering the 12-bar blues.

  1. Chord Practice: Just like before, you’ll alternate between the chords, but this time with an added G chord. Continue to focus on hitting each chord right on beat one.
  2. Counting and Timing: Keep up with the counting exercise – “one two three four” – ensuring that your chord strikes align perfectly with the count of one.
  3. Record and Review: As in the previous lesson, record your playing and listen back to assess your timing. Are you consistently hitting the chords on beat one? Pay attention to how the introduction of the G chord affects your timing and adjust accordingly.
  4. Preparation for 12-Bar Blues: While the task is simple, playing these three chords correctly on beat one is crucial preparation for more complex structures like the 12-bar blues, which you’ll encounter soon.
  5. Consistency is Key: Aim to play the sequence correctly three times in a row without losing the beat. This consistency will be a clear indicator of your readiness to move on.
