Lesson 24: Starting with the Basics (Exercise 1)

It’s crucial to start simple and accumulate small wins, building a solid foundation before diving into more complex rhythms. This approach ensures a gradual and effective learning process.

What to Expect in Exercise 1:

  1. Basic Rhythm: This initial drum beat might feel quite basic, but it serves an important purpose. It’s about getting comfortable with the fundamental aspects of drumming, such as keeping a steady beat and coordinating your hands and feet.
  2. Three Speeds Demonstration: In the accompanying video, I’ll demonstrate the exercise at three different speeds: 100 bpm (beats per minute), 120 bpm, and 160 bpm. Each speed presents its own challenges and will help you adapt to playing at different tempos.
  3. Your Turn to Practice: After watching the demonstrations, it’s your turn to try out the exercise. Start at the slowest speed (100 bpm) and gradually work your way up as you gain confidence and control.

Aiming for Mastery:

As always, our goal is to master each exercise before moving on to the next. Aim to play the drum beat correctly and consistently at all three tempos. Once you’re comfortable playing the exercise at 160 bpm with steady rhythm and coordination, you’ll be ready for the next challenge.
